Georg Adam Scheid’s Calligraphic Plique Spoons

It is certainly fair to call these spoons strange. They are unique, not only for bearing elegant calligraphy and triangular bowls, but also for their coherent, yet varied designs. Study the stems and finials of the top row spoons. They are all different, save two duplicates, yet they all express the same inspiration; they sprouted from the same root.

Scheid owned a large jewelry company in Vienna, Austria. While the Arabic calligraphy items were certainly attractive to tourists, they were also of interest in Turkey, Austria’s geographic neighbor.

A more detailed review of Scheid’s work will be found in the slide show The Weird and Wonderful Spoons of Georg Adam Scheid elsewhere in this website.
